BEHIND THE SCENES - ARIEL LAAKSO - PORTRAIT SESSION

In a never ending drive to continuously learn and evolve, lately, I have been experimenting with different beauty lighting techniques. Of course, one of my favourite "go to" techniques would be clam shell type lighting with a beauty dish and a white bounce. I wanted to evolve this technique slightly by producing a similar effect but with more light wrap around the subject. In this set up, I am using 1 large octabank with 2 strip banks on either side going outwards at a diangonal, as well as, a white bounce underneath to fill in the shadows. I found this to work quite well for Ariel's portrait session.

As for retouching, I cleaned up the background as well as adjusted Ariel's skin tones and textures. To do this I used various colour adjusting techniuques in both LR and PS, mild dodging and burning to enhance the lighting, then finally retouching the skin and background using the frequency separation technique. I find this technique to be one of the best for skin as it allows you to retouch the tones independently of the detail. In the end this gives you a nice final look without it looking fake or blurry.
